They write from Naples, that the commandant of Gaeta, not having had any intelligence of the factious persons whom he had sent out in a fortie to excite the people to revolt, had sent a person of the name of Francesco Torrell to obtain information; and who had no sooner left the place, than he gave himself up to the constituted authorities nearest Gaeta, declaring that he did not accept of the prince of Hesse Philippsthal's commission with any other view than to withdraw from the oppression under which the people of Gaeta laboured. "He deposed at the same time, that the prince dared not undertake anything without the approbation of the English commandant, who had assumed all the authority. The intelligence direct from Sicily would make it appear, that the English no longer think of defending that island against the French; and that a part of their artillery, and all their camp equipage, were already embarked.
They write from Capua, under the date of June 30, that the 23d regiment of light infantry passing through that place, had received orders to halt till the surrender of Gaeta, as they were assured that the attack would be made in five or six days.
