Full Text

Conscience.-An enlightened conscience permits none who slight her voice to have peace. The first wish engendered in the human heart, to quit the paths of virtue, in met by this ever wakeful monitor, mildly but firmly. If her voice be unheeded-if the victim shall press to the broad way that leads to destruction, she is still louder in her dissuasion -but if, unheeding her kindly voice he rush on to the acme of crime, mayhap it were better for him, if he had never opened his eyes to the light of day. He may plunge into the vortex of dissipation, he may participate in scenes of most voluptuous pleasure-he may surround himself with the most enchanting music that ever enraptured the ear or entranced the heart ; but whose voice is louder than the roar of bacchanalian companions? whose reproaches are ever ringing in his ear, amid the grossest sensuality? whose thunders are ever rolling about him, when beauty and fashion are discoursing 'eloquent music' in his presence? It is the voice of conscience! Her warning call has been unheeded, and fearfully does she punish the neglect. Whether sleeping or waking, alone or surrounded by revellers, she is ever sounding in her violator's ears, guilty. guilty!
