"We arrived here after a passage of 55 days, and are put under quarantine for 30 more. There are sixteen other vessels riding quarantine. A cartel arrived yesterday from Malta for the exchange of prisoners. The accounts she brings are very unfavorable. The English capture almost every American they fall in with. There are now 40 sail at Malta, 28 of which are condemned; and our informant expects all the rest will share the same fate.
"Markets here are miserable. Sugar, coffee, and cocoa would pay freight. Flour a mere drug. It has been offered for 9 dollars and refused. Wines 21 to 22 per pipe, brandy 57 to 60."
