No Gestapo, Please
In justice to gasoline consumers on the Eastern seaboard the contemplated readjustment of rationing by which Eastern and Mid-Western users would be placed on an equitable basis ought to be put into effect in the shortest possible time.
At the same time, measures should be taken to block the proposal of the OPA to set up an army of snoopers which the American Automobile Association says would be recruited up to 180,000 men. However great the gasoline emergency has been or might become there is no justification in this democracy for a gestapo modeled on the German pattern.
If the armed forces require more gasoline than in the past, the American public can be relied on to go without willingly. But the surest way to make the people willing to violate rules restricting driving is to set secret police to spying on them from behind trees and hauling them in on charges that nine times out of ten cannot be proved.
