COMMERCE AND POLITICS.

It is significant that all the uneasiness which affects commercial and financial circles is caused by the possibility of a Democratic success. There is no thought of postponing investments or large transactions, or reducing operations, because of a possibility of the election of Garfield. If that was guaranteed tomorrow the trade and business of the country would be relieved from all apprehensions. It is only the shadow of Democratic success that hangs over the future which renders clear-sighted men restless and timid. That this should always be the case in a Presidential year is a pregnant commentary on the relations of the Democratic party to the material interests of the country. That party's possible advent to power is feared as if it were an impending financial catastrophe, and so in truth it is.
