The Northern and Southern Virginia Railroad.

From the Wheeling Democrat of the 1st inst.

President will be elected.

line, via Charleston to the Kentucky State line. It is the hope, and every effort will be made to enlist the Pennsylvania Central Railroad Company in this with that road at or near Greensburg, in short and the most practical and direct railroad line is obtained from New York City to Memphis; and the part of the line in this State, will a short distance in Pennsylvania, is the only link to the consummation of this grand continental Railroad line, reaching from New York City to Memphis, El Paso, to San Diego, on the Pacific coast. The road from Memphis to San Diego, we all know is soon to be built, under the patronage of the Federal Government.

To enlist the Central Pennsylvania Company, the Stockholders at their meeting at Clarksburg adopted the following resolution:

Resolved, That the President and Directors of this Company be instructed to propose to the President and Directors of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company to construct or aid in the construction of this Company's Road upon such liberal and just terms as to the said President and Directors of this company shall seem best.

This Road, if made, will pass through a continuous unbroken coal field, from its entrance into this State to the Kentucky line, verging from the soft bituminous to cannel and splint; the splint to be used without the expensive process of coking, in smelting the iron ore, in close proximity, into iron. No other such a coal field exists on either hemisphere, and this is not all. Nearly the entire line passes through an extensive belt of fertile lands, capable of sustaining a dense population, and much the larger portion in forest, embracing a growth of timber of the most valuable variety. All these will find a market, and millions of dollars will thus be worked out of the consummation of this contemplated work, assuring facilities for ingress and egress to the vast numbers who will inhabit the interior line of our State.

It is not claiming too much to say that the iron, coal and timber developments to be accomplished by this work should make it a subject of interest to every part of the United States. If Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and elsewhere can, as they will be, furnished with iron at $18 per ton, instead of $36 per ton, the present price, it is at once a subject of general interest.

To our own people, we say do your duty and help will come. You have lands more than you need, contribute a part in order to make a security for the capitalists who will furnish the money. You all see where your interest is, and now do your duty and success will crown the effort.

We intend to make this a subject for further articles in our paper. We intend this only as an allusion to the mineral wealth on this proposed line; but shall hereafter give more specific information on that branch of the subject.
