The progress of building and operating railroads is one of the most remarkable features of American industrial and commercial development. Nine thousand three hundred and fifty-eight miles of railroad tracks were constructed in this country in 1881, and the total number of miles of railroads now in operation in the United States is 104,813, being an increase of about 53,000 miles in eleven years. The gross earnings of all these roads in 1881 aggregated $725,325,119, against $615,401,931 in 1880. The total dividends in 1881 were $93,314,200, against $77,115,411 in 1880.
