The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin
pays a high tribute to country
newspapers. "Those who are capable,"
says the Bulletin, "of making
the necessary allowances, of forget-
ting the drawbacks to which many
country editor is liable, and of which
many a city editor never dreamed
will find in our American press a
compared with that of other coun-
tries, a degree of originality and
common sense which holds out the
fairest hope for years to come, and
that we have little reason to fear that
the spring of originality which gives
life to our national character will ev-
er be dried up. The straight-forward
earnestness with which the American
country press discusses important
political, or other questions, and the
shrewdness which it displays in bring-
ing them directly home to its readers
form a subject of invariable commen-
dation to those intelligent Europeans
who have had opportunities for ob-
servation. Last and perhaps least
though not less attractive to many
the American country press can col-
lectively lay claim to more dry hu-
mor than any one who has not exam-
ined the subject is aware of. There
is more real original wit evolved by
the American press in one day than
can be found in all the collective
newspapers of Europe for a year
and the very great proportion of this
is from the country."
