PROF. CARLISLE'S ADDRESS.—We are sure no one of the large and intelligent audience, assembled in the Chapel of Wofford College on yesterday morning, were at all disappointed in the Anniversary Address before the Calhoun and Preston Literary Societies by Prof. James H. Carlisle. Prof. Carlisle enjoys an enviable reputation as a lecturer and literary speaker, and never fails to satisfy public expectation. Announcing, as his subject, "Some characteristics of the present age, as illustrated by recent progress in Astronomy," he reviewed briefly the history of Astronomy for the last half a century, incorporating in his address a number of facts, and scientific information, which, in the hands of one less gifted in investing what might be regarded as a dull subject, with interest, would prove anything else than entertaining; yet he commanded the deep attention of the audience throughout its delivery, not only interesting every one present, but furnishing edifying and suggestive matter, for thought and reflection.

His appeal, in conclusion, to the members of the Calhoun Society, to act worthy of the "Palmetto" which they wore as their badge, and the members of the Preston Society to emulate the virtues of the distinguished Carolinian, whose name their association bears, and to endeavor to encircle their brows with the same wreath of honor and fame which he secured, was peculiarly impressive, and, we trust, will not soon be forgotten.—Spartanburg Express.
