Little League officials at a meeting held Monday night, selected twenty-seven players to represent the East Hartford Little League in the District Tournament which will be played here starting on July 22. This squad will be pared down to a total of 14 players before the tournament gets underway.
The officials also selected Eric Sargeant and John "Whitey" May, as co-managers of the team. William Saunders and Everett Collier were named alternate managers.
Sargeant and May piloted last year's local representatives to the District Championship, and also to third place in the State Tournament.
The co-managers announced that practice sessions for the all-star team would start immediately.
The St. Mary's and Lions Club teams each had six players selected from their ranks; Exchange Club and Rotary Club, five each; Hose Company No. 2, three; and VFW two players.
Boys named to the squad include:
Lions- Dick Longo, Charles Gousse, Joe Hopkins, Michael Thayer, Charles Patria, and Kerry McGuire.
St. Mary's- Nick Sivo, John Groman, Joe Willis, Bill Kamerer, John LaPlant, and Ralph Peterson.
Exchange- Leo Gagliardi, Kirk Moir, Harold Unsworth, Bobby Schmitt, and Leo Mazzoli.
Rotary- Thomas Pathe, Gerry Heber, Frank Greene, Wayne Westbrook, and Bruce Robinson.
VFW- Lenny Wetmore and Truxton Taylor.
Hose Company- Ron Doane, Reg Farrington and Nick Denino.
The East Hartford entry will have five veterans of last year's district championship team, and will be rated high in the list of contenders for district honors.
According to Baaron Pitinger of the Hartford Times, the East Hartford League has developed a wealth of pitching material which will go a long way in deciding a short tournament series.
