Henry Ebner, a Well Known Resident of the County, Shot by a Mexican.
In Attempting to Compel the Mexican to Give Up a Revolver, Ebner Receives a Mortal Wound.
THE MURDERER LODGED IN JAIL.
[From Our Philbrook Correspondent.]
In Philbrook, Monday morning last at 9 o'clock, Henry Ebner was shot by a Mexican half-breed named John James. The shooting took place near Morison's barn, at a point directly opposite Dr. Long's residence. The wounded man was at once removed to his residence, and everything was done to render him comfortable. The external wound was on the left side, between the seventh and eighth ribs, and about seven inches from the median line. At this writing neither the course of the bullet nor what organs were punctured is known. The ball is probably lodged somewhere near the backbone internally. There is also a flesh wound on the left wrist, made by the bullet before it entered the body.
Ebner came to Philbrook from Wolf creek about two weeks ago and opened the Philbrook hotel. The half-breed came with him and had been in his employ until Sunday afternoon last, when he was paid off and discharged. He took from the house a 38-calibre revolver, and at the time remarked to Mrs. Ebner that he expected trouble. Sunday afternoon he was intoxicated, and at about 10 o'clock discharged the revolver once in the street. Monday morning Ebner met him and demanded the return of the revolver, which he declined to do. Ebner was preparing to strike him with a large club, when the Mexican drew his revolver and fired when only about four feet away. He then ran across the street and told Dr. Long that a man was shot. He even assisted his victim into a wagon and helped to carry him therefrom into his room. The Mexican has been in and about the Basin for five years, and was a "cowpuncher."
Ebner is well known about Maiden and Castle.
The shooter gave himself up at once, and was lodged in the jail at Lewistown.
Henry Ebner died Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock. He suffered continually much pain, and gradually sank until the end was reached.
