Mr. Cushing, it has been seen, by a paragraph in yesterday's Courier, declined being a candidate for re-election, after receiving the nomination of the Andover Convention—for what particular reason we have not learned. Judging from circumstances of public notoriety, we had supposed that he would not withdraw from the canvass, if his friends saw fit to put him in nomination, although he might not obtain what is called regular nomination. We are not of his immediate constituents nor do we claim any right to know his reasons, but it strikes us, that those of his constituents who instructed their delegates to support him in the Convention, may have curiosity to know what has wrought so apparently sudden a change in his purposes. The son of Jakeh was puzzled to know four things, which were too wonderful for him—“The way of an eagle in the air, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the midst of the sea, and the way of a man with a maid.” Had that industrious searcher into mysteries lived in this day of political contradictions, we apprehend he would have added a fifth to his catalogue of undeveloped embarrassments.—Boston Cou.
