Action Awaits Return To City Of Sen. McCarran
Passing Of Van Nuys Delayed Consideration
WASHINGTON, D.C. - (SNS) - Although the green light was to have been given the anti-poll tax bill as soon as legislation was put out of the way in the Senate affecting taxes, subsidies and the soldier vote, the legislation is still hanging fire.
The tax bill is pending before the President for action, having passed both houses of Congress; the subsidy measure has been acted on by the Senate and sent to the House; and the soldier vote bill is in conference between the two houses where an attempt is being made to bring together the views of the supporters of a federal ballot and the advocates of a strictly states' rights bill.
McCARRAN ABSENT
The present delay in the poll tax bill being attributed to the untimely death of Sen. Van Nuys and the absence from the city of the new chairman of the Judiciary committee, Sen. McCarran (D, of Nevada). He has been out of the city since his appointment to that post. He is expected to return the first of the week.
Just prior to his leaving to go to the coast Sen. McCarran is reported to have given assurance to Sen. Mead (D) of New York that he would call up the measure on his return from Nevada, provided that the pieces of "must" legislation were out of the way.
