the whole number of votes legally returned were 37,289. hon. william gray had 30,687, and the others on the adams ticket nearly the same number. hon. william baylies had 6,616, and the others on the unpledged ticket varied from 5986 to 5716. six towns made no returns. six towns made their returns too late, and five were rejected for informality. had these eleven returns been admitted, they would have given an addition of 915 to the adams ticket, and of 219 to the ticket in opposition.
