DO NOT SOUND A TRUMPET BEFORE THEE.—Some ministers when commencing in new places converse much about the great things they have seen in the victories of the cross, and especially what deeds of virtuous heroism have been accomplished much through their instrumentality. They would find it to their advantage not to dwell on this much, for these reasons: It is very often a display of little self. Secondly, the wise and the good had rather see them do wonders now than hear them ever telling what they used to do. And lastly, by this course the expectations of some will be raised high, which these ministers may not be able to meet, and so confidence will soon be lost.
