Mr. Editor:
A box of clothing for charitable distribution was recently consigned to me by Mrs. Bain and her friends, of Columbus, Ohio. I feel that this generous and timely offering, to the suffering poor in our midst, coming as it does from strangers to us and unsolicited, deserves more than a private acknowledgment.
From fifteen to twenty families have shared their bounty, who are doubly rewarded; by the heartfelt gratitude of the widow and orphan, whose anxious hearts have been comforted and whose homes have been gladdened by seasonable relief; and the approbation of Him who identifies himself with his poor, and declares: "I was naked and ye clothed me. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto these, ye have done it unto me."
In addition to the benefit conferred upon the needy, should not these gratuitous expressions of sympathy and kindness, on the part of Northern friends, awaken corresponding feelings of good-will in us?
It is pleasant to us to breathe these fragrant and refreshing breezes of brotherly kindness, which are so often wafted to us from a region whence we are expecting, too much, only the chilling winds, and stormy blasts of alienation and strife.
May the blessing of God rest upon those who are kindly disposed to befriend us in our need, and a union of hearts, thus strengthen and establish the bonds of national union.
