Mr. Barnes,
Sir--In your paper of the 14th inst. you inform the public that "it is a question frequently asked who shall be our next governor? and that the names of Worthington, Looker, Scott and Wells have been mentioned as candidates."
If I am one of the persons alluded to permit me through the medium of your paper, to tender my thanks to those who may feel an inclination to favor me with their suffrages, and to assure them and my fellow-citizens in general, that I am not a candidate for, neither is it at present my wish to be honored with the office of Governor. I have conceived it my duty to give this early information in order to prevent mistake, and that the attention of all may be directed to the choice of one, as you express it in your note, not only "of sound republican principles, of sterling worth and firmness," but who "combines" in a more eminent degree than myself the skill of a commander with the knowledge of civilian.
THOMAS SCOTT.
