Full Text
A faulty accelerator mechanism and imperfect brakes caused a car driven by two Atlanta uniformed policemen to crash into a utility pole as they were in pursuit of a speeding car that was believed to have been stolen.
Patrolmen R. Dulaney suffered a broken left ankle and his partner, C. E. Mundy, received lacerations to both hands in the crack-up that completely demolished the patrol car they occupied.
The officers said they were approaching the intersection of Fortress Ave. and Buena Vista St., SW, preparing to whip around the corner to apprehend the suspected stolen car driven when they realized the accelerator pedal had hung to the floor and that the brakes could not hold back the lurching auto.
The patrolmen said they were too close to the intersection to turn off the ignition switch. They also said they had put the patrol car in the shop Tuesday for repairs of the faulty accelerator.
The driver of the alleged stolen car identified by police as Gilbert Randolph, 19, 1086 Smith St. was later arrested by two other officers not too far from where Dulaney and Mundy had crashed, the officers said.
