HARTFORD, June 16.-Veranus D. Irish of East Buckfield, while a member of the Fifth Battery of Maine Volunteers, when near Winchester, Va., found in a deserted house a book which was first printed for John Bellamie, London, 1622, and reprinted by Rev. Geo. B. Cheever, D.D., N. Y. 1845. I noticed the names of the forty-one Pilgrims, including their families of sixty, who set sail from Plymouth, England, Sep. 6th, and espied Cape Cod on the 9th of Nov. One having been born on the ocean and named Oceanus-and one, Wm. Bradford, died. Of the forty-one who signed the compact twenty-one died before the next April, and twenty-three others of their company. First Indian seen Nov. 15th. First battle fought Dec. 6th: not one hurt. 18 arrows picked up and sent to England. First New England water drank and first corn found Nov. 16. Old beans and Indian wheat found Nov. 28th. First Sabbath kept on shore Dec. 24th. First Thanksgiving 1621. Fast 1623. First duel fought in 1621, by Edward Leister and Edward Dotey with dirk and sword: one wounded in the hand and one in the thigh. They were family servants of Stephen Hopkins. They were sentenced to have their feet and head tied together and lie twenty-four hours without meat or drink, but were released within an hour on account of their great pain by the Governor. First town meeting March 23rd, 1621. John Billington first one hung for stabbing his neighbor, 1630. The Pilgrims reduced the one hundred and fifty crimes punishable with death in England to eleven.
