WITH ITALIAN ARMIES ON
THE NORTHERN FRONT, VIA
ASMARA, ERITREA, Oct. 25.-
Italy's plans to civilize Ethiopia
were furthered yesterday by the
first moving pictures ever seen by
natives at Aduwa and by an
nouncement of a plan for substi-
tuting the European economic and
social system for the slavery and
feudal systems of the ancient
black empire.

Liberated slaves may remain
with their former masters is spe-
cifically requested by the slaves,
but only as salaried employes,
Italian authorities ruled. Slaves
wishing to leave their former
owners will be employed by the
Italian government of the
con-
quered territory on road building
and public works according to
their abilities.

Other details of altering the
social system which dates from
the time of King Solomon will be
worked out later.

The motion pictures shown the
natives depicted Italian civiliza-
tion - Italy's building, churches
and street scenes. The natives
were dumbfounded by the movies
and found it hard to realize the
whole process was not black
magic.

Further vanguard of white civi-
lization is the military motor road
from Aidi Kaie in Italian Eritrea
to Adigrat, first Ethiopian city to
fall to the invaders. A large part
of more than 60,000 Italian labor-
ers working in this area were
used, and still are busily employ-
ed, on this road, the jugular vein
to Italy's army through which
every ounce of supplies must flow
as the army goes deeper into
Ethiopia.

It is crowded with a double line
of motor trucks, roaring along
controlled by reckless drivers—
some of the hardest boiled this
correspondent has ever seen.

Seventeen smashed trucks were
counted in a few hours' ride. They
had hurtled over unparapeted
curves to the bottom of deep can-
yons, varying from several hun-
dred to 2,000 feet below the dusty
road.

The truck crews certainly were
killed and casualties from motor
accidents probably have been high-
er on this front than from fight-
ing.

The road traverses the most
impressive mountain scenery in
the world, resembling a mixture
of the Grand Canyon, the Dakota
Badlands and the Buttes and
Mesas of New Mexico. For 40
miles it clings to the mountain-
sides.

This astonishing road has 1,-
500 hairpin curves and scarcely a
100-yard section of flat ground.

The passage of thousands of
trucks has crushed the surface
into talcum-like dust which
squirts like water from under the
wheels and fills the air chokingly.

At night many of the rumbling
trucks proceed without lights be-
cause the jolting smashes the
lighting system. The daredevil
drivers don't seem to mind.

The mountains have fantastic
forms and colorings, ranging from
red, brown and mauve to a green-
ish tint and surpass in impress-
iveness the Rockies, the Alps, An-
des or Himalayas.
