has so considerably augmented, as to oblige the Inhabitants to be almost continually removing from one Village to another, or rather from one Seat of Infection to the other; for even the remotest Parts, which were always thought to be the most secure, have not been exempt. In the midst of this Calamity, we have had four successive Fires; the first on the 9th Instant, near the Mosque of Sultan Mahomet, which burnt for twenty-one Hours, with a violent North-East Wind, by which nine Districts of the Town have been consumed, each District containing about 700 Houses, among which were the Quarters of the Janizaries, consisting of ninety-eight Ranges of Chambers, each usually containing from 350 to 400 Men. The Janizaries then present, to the Number of about 20,000, were, in this Extremity, obliged to encamp on the great Plain called the Atmeidan; 200 of them have been since missing, and it is concluded were destroyed in attempting to extinguish the Flames. The other three Fires were less considerable, burning only four or five Hours each; by which, however, many Seraglios of the great Men of this Government have been reduced to Ashes.

An infectious calamity has augmented considerably, obliging inhabitants to move continually between seats of infection, even in remotest parts. Amid this, four successive fires: the first on the 9th instant near the Mosque of Sultan Mahomet, burning 21 hours with a violent North-East wind, consuming nine districts including 98 ranges of Janizaries' chambers; 20,000 Janizaries encamped on Atmeidan, 200 missing. The other three fires burned 4-5 hours each, destroying many seraglios of great men.
