Yesterday the whole army was drawn out, and formed round an eminence, to witness the hanging of a spy. Ostensibly he was a deserter from the enemy; but his conduct while here, and his attempt to return to Canada, under suspicious circumstances, demonstrated to the court martial, which tried him, that he was not a deserter, but a spy, sent by the British to reconnoitre, obtain information and return to Canada. At his execution he did not wait for the cart to be drawn from under him, but jumped off, with intention probably of breaking his neck and rendering the pain momentary.
Several days ago, Gen. M'Comb, with about 1000 men and six pieces of cannon, went into Canada on the east side of the lake, in the neighborhood of Missisquoi (or Missiscoui) bay, and have been occupying a small village or two there ever since. In the mean while some troops have been pushed on towards the lines on the west side of the lake, and the whole army have been under marching orders with four days provision. I rather think the original intention was to penetrate as far as St. Johns and destroy the fort and other public property, and return immediately, but it is said the river is not frozen, and therefore it cannot be done; yet the army or part of it will go, I believe, and destroy a block-house, and a fortified stone mill, at the mouth of river La Cole, which command the passage of the river Sorrell, about 6 miles south of Isle aux Noix. Eleven, A. M. the 5th regiment is preparing to march immediately.
