Captain Vieweg Appeals For
More Friendly Environment
For Men
The Naval Air Base, through its chief chaplain Prickett, played host to the Baptist Ministers' Conference of the Accomack Association of Baptist Churches, Tuesday. It was an enjoyable day for all
Captain W. R. Vieweg, commanding officer of the base, appealed to the ministers to help the authorities at the base build a strong morale in the lives of the young men in their charge. He also appealed to the ministers to help create a more friendly environment for the enlisted men of the base. He pointed out the difficulty the married enlisted men were finding in locating quarters for their families outside the base where there were children in the family. He also suggested that a little more patience and consideration on the part of some of the legal officers called to deal with some of their enlisted men would greatly help.
The morning devotionals were in the hands of Rev. John P. Oliver, Jr., pastor of Drummondtown Baptist Church. Pastor Oliver spoke briefly but in a thought-provoking way of the minister as prophet and priest. He also touched upon the kingliness of the minister's office as pastor.
The principal address of the day was delivered by Chaplain Prickett of the Base who spoke of "Religion in the Navy" and the work of the chaplain in the navy. It was an exceedingly interesting discussion, and most enlightening withal. After lunch at the Base, the chaplain with the aid of one of the flight officers, took the ministers and their wives on a tour of the base. Then came adjournment. All voted The Chincoteague Naval Air Base as gracious hosts. An invitation has been extended to the Ministers' Union of the Eastern Shore to meet at the Air Base for their meeting in May.
