1st. That his conduct towards me in relation
to the defence of Fort Stephenson, was anything
but that of a gallant officer or great General, &c.
2d. That when the ladies of Chillicothe presented
me with a sword, they at the same time
presented Gen. Harrison with a petticoat.
Having uniformly given in reply to the numerous
letters addressed to me by persons engaged
on either side of the great political contest
now going on, that I conceived it would be
unbecoming in me as an officer in the army, to
do or say anything that might be used to affect
that contest in any way, unless I should be myself,
or those who served under me in the war
of 1812, strictly attacked--I must now, in pursuance
of this rule, instead of answering your
queries myself, refer you to General Harrison
for every satisfaction you desire as to the first
allegation, (he having in his possession whatever
correspondence may have passed between
himself and me, having relation in any way to
the defence of Fort Stephenson,) and to the ladies
of Chillicothe themselves for an affirmation
or denial on their part, of the assertion contain
ed in the second allegation.
I have the honor to be, gentlemen,
With respect, your obedient servant,
G. CROGHAN.

Main Argument
in response to two allegations against gen. harrison involving croghan's experiences, he declines direct reply to maintain army neutrality in the political contest and refers inquirers to harrison for details on fort stephenson and to chillicothe ladies regarding the sword and petticoat presentation.
