Assailant of a Little Girl Given 800 Lashes With a Buggy Whip.
JACKSON, Tex., May 16.-A traveling glass-blower named Maney was arrested for taking improper liberties with a 9-year-old daughter of Mr. Cason, superintendent of the city street improvement force. Had it not been for Mr. Cason a mob would have taken Maney out and swung him to a tree. Upon deliberation Cason decided to give the man a cowhiding and allow him to go. In the morning at 9 o'clock he was brought to police headquarters, and in the engine room stripped of all his clothes and tied hand and foot to the wheel of the engine, and in the presence of the mayor, chief of police and all the city officials, Cason dealt him 800 blows with a buggy whip. Next his son took the whip and gave him a few. Father and son then alternated in avenging their darling's wrongs, until the villain had been dealt 800 blows. He was then unbound and told that if he did not leave the city in half an hour he would be hanged. He lost no time in leaving, and was followed by an angry crowd, who wanted to see that he went without delay.
