"To your tents, O! Israel!"

The Rhode-Island Republican attempts to soothe the alarms of two or THREE of its fellow-townsmen, who are, it is feared, about to vote for this horrid Constitution, as bad as it is, lest they should hereafter have to swallow one a thousand times more nauseous! The Editor, to console this desponding duo or trio, assures them that if they do adopt this Constitution, the first thing will be AMENDMENT, AMENDMENT, till the thing will be moulded to suit the purposes of those who have got it up. This sagacious Editor further assures us the control is now in the hands of the PEOPLE, and conjures his fellow-citizens not to yield up this inestimable privilege to DESIGNING DEMAGOGUES—in plain English, the control is now in the county of Newport! and they are the people who are implored not to yield this power to those upstart demagogues, the freemen of the north counties, who have dared to outstrip them in wealth and population! But as to amendments! We were really under the impression the Newport people opposed the Constitution because it will be so hard to amend it. At any rate, our anti-constitutionalists here, tell us Newport will be able to control the amendments, and this is the reason they are opposed to the Constitution. Truly, it is a bad rule that won't work both ways; and thus are bandied about these ideas of amendment, both of which are ridiculous and unworthy the reasoning powers of reflecting and candid minds.
