THE DISTRICT FAIR.
Every Indication That It Will Be a
Success.
The American people are a race of
amusement seekers, and their tastes are
varied, but nearly everybody enjoys the
good old agricultural fair. The pious
deacon who under any other circumstances
would not attend a horse race
is seen at the fair, and it is here that
the society men and women of town
mingle with their country brethren and
sisters. After a few hours spent among
the show horses, the prize cattle, the fat
pigs, the exhibition halls, etc., all are
ready for more exciting sport, and when
the bell rings all crowd to the stands
and track eager to witness the spirited
contests of the noblest of animals, the
horse. Next week is fair week in this
city and Los Angeles is so fortunate as
to be situated in the state of California,
where nature is bountiful, the fields are
fertile, the horses are fast, the men are
industrious and the women are fair.
With such excellent natural advantages
surrounding it the local fair should
eventually become one of the best of the
kind in the country, and it is pleasant
to know that it seems to be on the road
to great success. The big stallion trot
on Monday is engaging considerable at-
tention, and it promises to be "a hoss
race that is a hoss race," as the agricul-
turist occasionally remarks.
