Praises CORE Leaders For
Accepting Suffering
Miami, Fla. Martin Luther King, Jr., paid tribute to the seven members of CORE's Interracial Action Institute who chose jail over bail when arrested during a lunch counter sit-in.
King told members of the Institute: "Self accepted suffering, the willingness to go to jail if need be, is crucial in our struggle. Not all can make this sacrifice, but some must."
"We must rid ourselves of the psychology of the two car garage, of the ranch house, of possessions if we are to achieve non-attachment and the self-purification of Gandhi," said King.
The willingness to suffer is needed for philosophical, moral reasons and for practical reasons added King. We simply cannot afford to pay bail bond, legal expenses, and fines.
King spent two days at the CORE Institute discussing the broader implications of the philosophy of nonviolence.
Those at the Institute have been engaged in restaurant sit-ins, theatre testing, swim-ins, and voter registration.
