Full Text

Last Thursday morning a dog of uncommon large size, with obvious marks of the hydrophobia, made his appearance in Crown street, and attacked every living creature that came in his way; he then ran into Broadway and fastened upon a poor man encumbered with a basket on his head, whose throat he tore in a terrible manner; leaving the poor man almost senseless, he attacked another, and almost entirely mutilated his arm. A few persons collecting in a shop for mutual security, a medical fop took occasion to observe, that the opinion generally entertained of a mad dog was totally erroneous, and a vulgar fancy; no such thing ever existed in America... Well, (said an honest, ignorant breeches maker, looking significantly at this modern representative of Esculapius) if we have no mad dogs, we have at least among us some foolish puppies.

Event Details

A large dog with hydrophobia appeared in Crown street, attacked living creatures, then in Broadway bit a man carrying a basket on his head in the throat and another in the arm. People sheltered in a shop; a medical man claimed mad dogs do not exist in America, rebutted by a breeches maker calling him a foolish puppy.
