Ed Howe, "Sage Of Potato Hill," Will Have Operation For Eyes

KANSAS CITY, May 15—(P)—Ed Howe, the author who often has "put woman in her place," was on his way to Baltimore for an operation today after offering his aid to a 97-year-old woman who wants to write a book.

The Atchison, Kas., writer, who is known as the "Sage of Potato Hill," soon will undergo an operation which he hopes will restore his eyesight, now shrouded by cataracts.

As his train stopped here last night, Mrs. J. C. McConnell of Turner, Kas., spry for her years, bustled into the car and told Howe she was going to write a book.

"Well now this wonderful!" exclaimed Howe as she sat down, beside him.

"There's nothing wonderful about it," she parried. "I've just taken care of myself."

"Here we are," Howe continued speaking to the group about him. "Each of you thinks you will write the best American book. At 82 I think I'm going to write it. And here is Mrs. McConnell; she is going to write the great American book at 97."

"I want you to write a foreword or something," Mrs. McConnell explained.

"I'll do anything you want," the Kansas editor and author told her. "and I believe you really will write it."

Then they compared notes on eating and sleeping. Howe said he didn't sleep well and he couldn't eat what he wanted.

"I know you have been over-eating or something," Mrs. McConnell said maternally. "Now you come down and see me, and I'll have a good dinner. Then you can write a good book."

Howe hopes to be able to complete his book "Final Conclusions" after he recovers from the operation. He was accompanied by his son, Gene, of Amarillo, Texas.
