Full Text

February 25.

Extract of a letter from Wilmington, N. C. dated Feb. 25.

"The dreadful cry of fire awoke us about 4 o'clock this morning, since when I have not sat down until now and at the same time in the after-noon. It broke out in a bake-house next door to Dr. Hill's, exactly where the great fire commenced in 1797, and so rapid were the flames that by day light all that square was entirely consumed, with the one from Watkins's corner down to the water edge. The court-house was on fire a number of times. Several houses were blown up in hopes to arrest the progress of the flames, but all to no purpose. Never did I see a more awful conflagration, and so great a number of distressed objects as the streets were crowded with this morning."
