LEWIS TAKEN HOME.
MOTHER AND BROTHER OF FRED N. LEWIS ARRIVE LAST NIGHT AND YOUNG MAN TAKEN HOME THIS AFTERNOON.
Mrs. Lewis, mother of Fred N. Lewis, the young man who is in custody of the officials, because of manifestations of insanity, and a younger brother of Lewis, arrived from Macedonia, Iowa, last night. Their home is not a great distance from Council Bluffs.
Mrs. Lewis has been in consultation with Sheriff Bogue and the officials today, and is straightening up the affairs of the young man preparatory to taking him back to Iowa. This morning she visited her son, who recognized her at once. Lewis' mental trouble seems to take the shape of great plans for doing impossible things. He is a civil engineer by profession and long and continuous application to his work disturbed his mental balance.
He has always been of a visionary nature, and this has resulted in the proclamation of some of the great schemes he has announced.
Lewis continues in about the same condition, his principal desire now being to get out of custody. Last night he wrenched loose one of the iron bars from his bed in the jail and used that as a battering ram in an endeavor to force his way out. The heavy door resisted his efforts, although he sprung the bars somewhat with his battering ram.
Lewis was taken east this afternoon on the early train. He will probably be placed under treatment, in the hope that he will recover his sanity.
