New York--Police announced that they held a man who received fifty thousand dollars ransom money paid by Col. Chas. Lindbergh in an ineffectual effort to recover his kidnapped son two years ago; his name is Bruno Richard Hauptmann of the Bronx.
The announcement said he was an alien and came to the United States as a stowaway eleven years ago.
Unconfirmed reports said Hauptmann paid for gasoline at a filling station with a ten dollar gold certificate; the proprietor becoming suspicious at the use of banned money, notified the police department.
Another report said that the man had an auto which was stopped in New Jersey near Lakewood the night before the Lindbergh baby was kidnapped on March 1, 1932 and the body was found May 12. Commissioner O'Ryan, Col. Norman Schwarzkopf, Supt. of New Jersey State Police, J. Edgar Hoover, head of Bureau of Investigation of Dept. Justice, who are working on the case, made announcement stating that thirteen thousand seven hundred fifty dollars of ransom money were found on Hauptmann's property. Officials said that they believed his arrest would solve the mystery.
