The Hub of the Southern Hemisphere.
Valparaiso is the South American
Boston, and the most un-Spanish city
on the Pacific. Its streets are kept
scrupulously clean, and are as safe
though almost as crowded, at midnight
as at noon; paupers are unknown:
the public spirit of the citizens exu-
berates in all sorts of benevolent and
educational institutions. There are
art schools and polytechnic colleges,
daily newspapers, Protestant chapels
and halls of the Maçon Natura Society,
a sort of secular league that germinated
in Barcelona, Spain, but expanded
chiefly in the Transatlantic republics

Santiago equals that between Edinburgh
