A Person is lately arrived here from Detroit, or Fort St. Joseph, situate on the navigable Channel which unites the great Lake Huron and Erie; he informs, that at Detroit there is a Town of near three Hundred Houses, and a settled Country round of Three Thousand Souls and upwards, of which we have had no notion... What think you of Men of Estates, some of whom keep Coaches, &c. at a Place 750 Miles behind us? The Lakes and Rivers open the Way to very remote Indian Nations, the Trade has enriched these People, who are 8 or 900 Miles from any Sea, in the Heart of North America. We have a Garrison at Detroit, and a large Vessel is building to transport Necessaries over Lake Erie, (120 Miles long) to supply the Inhabitants, who are in want of Cloathing and other European Goods, &c. great Quantities have already been sent from thence. As soon as Peace, which they now enjoy, shall give them means and time to put their Farms in order, the Place will be able to support an army with Provisions.
