Former Political Advisor of Odell and Roosevelt Indicted With Brother.
NEW YORK, Jan. 26.--Ex-Congressman Lucius N. Littauer, erstwhile political adviser of Governor Odell and Theodore Roosevelt--when the latter was chief executive of the State, was indicted by the federal grand jury today for smuggling jewelry into the country. His brother and partner in business, William Littauer, for whom the jewelry is said to have been brought over from France, was also charged with conspiracy in the indictment.
The brothers are indicted under section 2862 of the revised statutes, which provides a fine of $10,000 or two years imprisonment, or both, for clandestinely introducing merchandise into the country without accounting for duties legally due thereon.
Lucius and William Littauer, under the firm name of Littauer Brothers, of Gloversville, N. Y., control a large part of the output of the glove making industry of this country. On July 1 last Lucius Littauer returned from a trip abroad on the liner Kron Prinzessin Cecille and after a few days in this city departed for Washington.
In the meantime, it is said, the customs authorities had learned that he had failed to declare a diamond necklace and a diamond and pearl tiara, valued at about $40,000. After an investigation, Collector of the Port Malone dispatched an inspector to Washington to make inquiries about the jewelry.
Rumor has it that Littauer heard of the inquiry and anticipated the customs man's visit by hastening back to this city and turning the necklace and tiara over to the customs authorities.
