Demolition Derby
Tonight
A nerve-shattering treat for the big crowds of stock car racing fans is on the card tonight at the Stock Island Speedway, as a wild field of big racers enter the Demolition Derby, scheduled just before the main feature race.
Promoter Lou Splichal, who performed as the Phantom Driver in the last derby claims "my ulcers prevent me from entering this one - I'd rather watch the murder and mayhem," he says.
The idea is for the toughest and roughest cars and drivers to stick it out to the bitter end, through rammings, collisions and frequent immersions in the salt pond.
Bigger, heavier cars will enter the lists, and this should mean they'll all have a better chance of "staying" to provide the fans with a rip-roaring evening
An eight-race card looms for the fans' enjoyment tonight, and with the topsy - turvy results of the last few weeks' racing at the Speedway, it's anybody's guess who'll top the feature spin around 20 laps of the tough course.
Point system handicapping of the drivers continues in effect this week and appears to be proving out as one of the fairest ways to cope with the starting problems.
Entry blanks are available at the track for the fans to pick their first four choices of the winning cars in the feature event—remember, that in case of ties, the lowest numbered blank wins the cash. so get there early to enter your choices.
