WEEVIL CONTROL.

The optimism that has prevailed in this county during the spring in regard to cotton production this year should not deter any one from taking the necessary measures for weevil control. The wet summers of the past several years has probably acted to undermine the confidence of many planters in the use of poisons. This, we are satisfied, is a mistaken policy, and is almost certain to react against such farmers. That poisoning has not been successful for some seasons in a general sense is probably true, but this may be attributed to the abnormal rainfall. Most people look forward to a dry season this year, and if this is a correct forecast, common sense, it appears to us, should prescribe poisoning as never before. Numbers of farmers have staked practically their all on a cotton crop this year, and a failure will mean disaster to many. Over-confidence is the ruin of many people, and we hope it will not be allowed to ruin a cotton crop this season, when a crop is of such vital importance to our people.
