Full Text

"Man Overboard."

On Monday last, when the steamer Curtis Peck, on her way down from Richmond, was crossing the Point of Shoals, below Jamestown, this thrilling cry was sounded from her forward deck, and all was bustle and consternation. The paddles were stopped, the boat was lowered in all haste, and the man, a sailor, who had jumped overboard, picked up and brought onboard, alive and kicking. He had come on board the steamer at Richmond, in a fit of the "horrors," stating that he had been twenty years in the "States' service," and having no money to pay his way, Captain Davis kindly gave him his passage free. His jumping overboard was probably only a lark, as he took care to throw an empty barrel over before he took the plunge. The cold souse had the almost immediate effect of restoring him to sobriety. -Norfolk Herald.
