WASHINGTON—(INS)—A 27-year-old woman atomic physicist, clad in pajamas, leaped from the seventh floor apartment of a Pakistan Embassy code expert Tuesday and landed in a barberry bush without serious injury.
Police said that the jump apparently resulted from a thwarted romance.
The woman, Helen M. Dean, suffered only two fractured heels in the 80-foot drop.
Miss Dean, who works in the atomic division of the Bureau of Standards, was later quoted by detectives as saying she "couldn't cope with life any longer."
Police said that Miss Dean jumped from the apartment of Salim Khan, 24, of the Pakistan Embassy.
Detectives said Khan told them he had professed his love for Miss Dean, but had told her that marriage might interfere with his diplomatic career.
Khan and Miss Dean reportedly attended a party together last night.
