Full Text
From the United States Chronicle, printed in Providence.
Friend Wheeler,
ACTS of peculiar justice, and humanity, are worthy of commemoration: Such are the doings of the general assembly of the state of Rhode-Island at their last session, in the prohibition of the African slave-trade: it demands not only the acknowledgment of those who were peculiarly intrusted with the care of the remonstrance thereon, for the kind and generous reception they met with from both Houses, but also the applause of all, who are wishing to see a stop put to that scene of wickedness, which hath long wounded, not only the tender feelings of humanity in many excellent men, but the cause of Christianity, both in America and in Europe; where no doubt the knowledge of this Law will soon come. Far may it be from stopping there, but extend as far as the practice of enslaving mankind, of any description or complexion whatever, doth or may exist; and the worthy example be followed by those in power, to the total abolition of every species of slavery, with all the horrid consequences attendant thereon.
A real Friend to the Laws of Justice and Benevolence.
