Augusta, Me., March 7.—The features of yesterday's municipal elections in 13 Maine cities was the unanimous election of Freeman Patten as mayor of Gardiner, Charles E. Hyde, Republican, as mayor of Bath, and E. C. Reynolds as mayor of South Portland, they receiving every one of the votes cast, almost unparalleled occurrences in this state.
The surprises were in Waterville where the Democrats confidently expected to defeat W. C. Philbrook, but did not; in Lewiston, where the Democrats elected their mayor, George Pottle, state assessor, and carry three wards, with no election in another, and in Ellsworth, where the Democrats elected the mayor, through Republican inaction and disaffection in one ward.
The result in Portland was expected. Practically no opposition to the Republican candidates developed in Hallowell and Gardiner, and their election was a foregone conclusion. In the remaining cities the results were just about as predicted. In none of them were there issues over which to arouse much excitement, and the elections were generally quiet.
