PRESIDENT THANKS CARDINAL GIBBONS.
On the 11th inst. President Wilson sent the following letter to Cardinal Gibbons:
"My Dear Cardinal Gibbons:
The demands on my time incident to the arrival and entertainment of the foreign commissions now in Washington have delayed my replying to your gracious letter. I am sure you will understand and I beg that you will pardon the delay.
The very remarkable resolutions unanimously adopted by the archbishops of the United States at their annual meeting in the Catholic university on April 18 last, a copy of which you were kind enough to send me, warms my heart and makes me very proud indeed that men of such large influence should act in so large a sense of patriotism and so admirable a spirit of devotion to our common country."
"Cordially and sincerely yours,
WOODROW WILSON."
On the second Sunday of last month the writer enjoyed the privilege of hearing Cardinal Gibbons deliver a sermon in which he dwelt upon the words of Jesus when he told the Jews, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's".
In kind, sweet words the Cardinal took the position that it was the duty of every Catholic, who was a citizen of this country, to render unto the President their loyal support.
