Full Text

Why Is it?—Kansas affairs, under the preceding as well as the present administration, have been deemed of the most serious importance. Hence the men who have been sent there as Governors and Secretaries, were able, tried, and distinguished gentlemen—distinguished not only as men of ability, of national political views, but as faithful party men. And yet, with the exception of one Secretary, every one of these true and tried Democrats, after a short residence in Kansas, found it impossible to retain their self respect, and yet carry out the policy of the "powers that be." Hence Reeder and Stanton were removed, and Walker and Geary resigned; and Denver earnestly asks to be recalled and restored to his position at the head of the Indian bureau. In the language of the Union, there must be something grossly unjust to the people of Kansas in the policy of the general government, or such faithful party men would never have dared to dissent from it.
