Full Text

The Capitol.—We are happy in being able to state that the Capitol at Iowa City is progressing at rapid rate, there being from fifty to sixty hands actively engaged on it. Much credit is due the Superintendent and Territorial Agent for the speedy prosecution of this work under the embarrassed condition of the Territorial Treasury. At the opening of the season, there was but a small amount on hand, which was soon exhausted, when it was deemed expedient, in order that operations might be continued, to issue transferable certificates of indebtedness to laborers and contractors, for services rendered. These certificates answer a good purpose, as they are receivable in payment for city lots, passing currently at par.

We understand that the Territorial Agent and the commission appointed by the Governor to affix the minimum price of lots, have completed the task, reducing it one-third of the value placed upon it at the last sale. At their present valuation, they hold out inducements to purchasers rarely to be met with. Some of the most valuable lots in the city are to be sold at the next sale.
