VOICES OF THE SEA.

BY MRS. SARAH S. BOWWELL.

Ah! thou hast many a changing tone,
Thou restless, moaning sea,
'Tis the murmur of the myriad throng
Which hath sunk to rest in thee.

Sometimes thy voice steals to the heart,
Like a lover's wooing tone,
As if, from the bowers in thy crystal depths,
Whispered some loving one.

And then, like a shattered harp string's note,
Swells out a mournful wail,
As if the woe of a broken heart
Were borne on the passing gale.

Sometimes there comes a piercing shriek,
Ringing along the air,
Like the voice of one who hath looked on death,
In horror and despair.

And then, at times, thou hast the tone
Of a happy child at play,
Borne from fairy coral groves,
Where bright haired children lay.

But when the wind awakes in might,
Thy voice is strong and clear
As the solemn swell of an anthem high,
And we pause entranced to hear.

I catch the deep, triumphal tone,
In thy resounding roar,
Of those who rest beneath thy waves,
Who will walk the earth no more.
