On Thursday last there was a Motion in Arrest of Judgment, in the Court of King's Bench, by the Defendant's Counsel, in the Cause of Philips and Philips on the Bribery Act; but the Motion was over-rul'd, so the Verdict for the Plaintiff stands good. The Action was brought against the Defendant for being guilty of Bribery at the last Election of Bridgnorth, in the County of Salop, contrary to the late excellent Statute for preventing Bribery and Corruption in the Election of Members to serve in Parliament; for which Offence, the Defendant forfeits to the Plaintiff the Sum of 500 l. and becomes ever after incapable of voting at any future Election. It is to be hoped that this will be a sufficient Warning to all Persons not to engage in the like infamous Practices, since both the Corruptor and the corrupted are equally subject to the like Penalties; and, besides, the heinous Sin of Perjury must attend all Persons giving their Votes under such scandalous Influences.
