ALEXANDRIA:
MONDAY MORNING, JAN. 21.
Canal to Maryland.
The proposition of Mr. Walker to the Senate to transfer to the State of Maryland, under certain conditions, the stock now owned and held by the United States in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, is a very important one, in our view, to the interests of our town. As far as we can learn, there is a decided and general opposition to the proposed measure on this side of the river, and we, also, learn that the citizens of the State of Virginia who are interested in the work, are all opposed to the scheme. Under this view of the case, and as the present session of Congress will be a short one, we hope that the Senator from Mississippi may be induced to let the subject remain without further action.
There are numerous grave and important questions connected with this matter, involving many interests, which readily present themselves, in its examination, but which we do not feel that it necessary at present to touch upon—
Hereafter, if the subject is pressed, we shall of course enlarge upon them, as a matter of duty
We still hope, however, that the honorable mover of the proposition, whose intelligence and liberal character are highly appreciated by us, will consent to let the subject rest.
