Hospital at Ponce
SAN JUAN, Porto Rico, July 25. - Major General Blanton Winship,
68, Governor of Porto Rico, escaped
an assassin's bullet at Ponce today
while he was reviewing a parade.
Preliminary reports to the Gover-
nor's Palace here said the police
immediately returned the fire which
came from among a crowd watch-
ing the celebration of the fortieth
anniversary of the landing of Am-
erican troops in the Spanish-Amer-
ican War.
One man was killed and a num-
ber injured. Many arrests have been
made.
Later reports said at least 20
persons were injured by the police
fire, some seriously. Rioting im-
mediately broke out.
Senator P. J. Seralles, who was
standing in the reviewing stand,
was slightly injured.
Gov. Winship was struck in the
arm by a bullet fired by the would-
be assassin and was slightly in-
jured.
An American Naval Officer of
the aircraft carrier Enterprise, has
wired 20 persons have been taken
to the hospital. The shooting did
not interrupt the parade and the
marchers continued passing the re-
viewing stand, only a few of them
knowing what had occurred.
The Nationalists opposed the an-
niversary celebration and issued a
manifesto calling a meeting to pro-
test against it.
