S. S. Marshall Elliot Is Christened By Mrs. John Griswald
North Carolina Shipbuilding company's 44th Liberty Ship, the Marshall Elliott, was launched yesterday afternoon at 2:15. Named for one of the founders of Johns Hopkins university and a leading authority on romance languages, the Marshall Elliott was sponsored by Mrs. John S. Griswald, wife of a W. and J. Sloane Company superintendent. The Sloane Company does all joiner work on vessels constructed here.
Mrs. Griswald's matron of honor was Mrs. J. C. Greenway, and the maid of honor was Miss Anna M. Lander, both of Greenwich, Conn.
Elliott was born in Wilmington, Del., in 1846. He was graduated from Haverford college in 1866 and from Harvard in 1868. He also studied in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Austria.
At Johns Hopkins university, he served as an associate in romance languages from 1879 to 1884, he was associate professor from 1884 to 1892 and professor from 1892 to 1910. He became known for his research in medieval French languages and gave special attention to the works of Marie de France.
For seven years he was secretary of the Modern Language association of America. In 1907 he was decorated with the Cross of the Legion of Honor. Before his death in 1910, he became the country's leading authority on romance languages.
